Best places to live for remote workers

A remote worker needs four things to line up: a legal way to stay, fast internet, a cost of living that leaves margin, and a tax position that does not quietly turn into full residency on worldwide income. This ranking weights residency access and internet more heavily than the overall list, and applies newcomer regimes such as Spain's Beckham Law, which now covers digital nomad visa holders.

    Dubai · top rate 0%

Dubai combines zero personal income tax with fast, purchasable residency, world-class flight connections and very fast internet, which makes it the default base for globally mobile founders.

    TaxInternetWarm climate

Summer heat above 40°C for four months, rising rents and a car-dependent, high-spend lifestyle quickly erode the tax saving.

    Thailand

Bangkok · top rate 35% · Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa

Thailand offers excellent private hospitals, very fast home internet and a low cost of living, with dedicated visas for remote workers and retirees.

    Warm climateTaxInternet

Since 2024, foreign income remitted to Thailand is taxable for residents without LTR, and Bangkok heat and air pollution are serious drawbacks.

Rents and car ownership are extremely expensive, and residency is almost entirely tied to high-salary employment or very large investments.

How this ranking works

  • Residency access and internet speed are weighted highest after tax
  • Digital nomad and remote-work visa routes are listed for each country
  • Cost of living is weighted above healthcare, reflecting a younger, mobile profile
  • Watch the residency day count: staying past it usually makes you tax resident

Tax scores come from the Tax Atlas dataset (see methodology). Quality-of-life factors are editorial composite ratings for comparison, informed by public indices (Numbeo, the Global Peace Index, WHO service coverage, EF English Proficiency, Ookla Speedtest) and official visa pages. Regime-adjusted tax assumes you qualify. Not tax or immigration advice.

Questions

Frequently asked

Do digital nomads pay tax?+

Usually somewhere. Spending more than the residency threshold (often 183 days) in one country generally makes you tax resident there. Some digital nomad visas come with a tax exemption on foreign income and some do not. Each country on this list shows its residency test and main visa route.

Which digital nomad visas come with a tax break?+

Spain's digital nomad visa can be combined with the Beckham Law regime, taxing Spanish-source work income at a flat 24% up to €600,000. Territorial systems such as Panama, Costa Rica, Malaysia and Georgia do not tax most foreign-source income at all. Rules change often, so check the country page before applying.
